Autumn 1 Geography focus : Biomes

Base 6 - The Beluga Whales

Hello and welcome to Base 6’s page! Our teacher is Mrs Muir and our teaching assistant is Mrs Salter, Mrs Salter also teaches us on Fridays.

In Base 6, we like to enjoy learning and always make sure to try our best. We make sure we ‘believe in ourselves’ and work together to achieve our targets. Children are encouraged to explore their passions and foster a love for learning mentality.

Reading is a huge focus at Teagues Bridge Primary School. We encourage the children to read their reading book along with books that spark their interest- this can all be recorded in their reading diary.

Our guided reading book this half term is ‘Danny the Champion of the World’ by Roald Dahl. You may be familiar with Roald Dahl, or like to do some research of your own! What other books has he written? What inspires his stories? Bring in what you find out; we would love you to share any research with the rest of the class!

We hope that you have found this information useful, if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Base 6 team.

Value of the Season

The value of the season is Honesty. Base 6 have been developing their understanding of being honest. At the moment we are focusing particularly on being honest in our classroom and in the wider school environment.

Geography focus

In Geography this term we are focusing on Biomes. Below is an outline of what we will be learning.

What I will learn:

  • Climate zones are areas around the world with a certain pattern of weather.
  • The main climate zones are Tropical, Arid, Temperate, Polar, Continental and Mediterranean.
  • Earth is divided into major ecosystems called biomes.
  • Identify and name different physical aspects of biomes.
  • The Tundra biome covers approximately one fifth of the Earth’s surface.
  • Biomes are defined by the dominant vegetation, for example, a deciduous forest is made up of mostly non-evergreen trees.
  • Polar bears have adapted to suit their environment: they have blubber and thick fur fir warmth; they have white fir for camouflage: they have wide paws and claws for walking over ice.

In Science, Base 6 will be learning about Living things and their Habitats. We will be learning about:

  • The differences in the life cycles of:
an insect,      an amphibian,     a mammal       and a bird.
  • About metamorphosis of amphibians.
  • The life process of reproduction in some plants and animals.

Homework and Reading

It is important that your child is reading at home at least four times a week, this helps them with all of their learning throughout school.

Children will have homework every week. Homework will be handed out on a Wednesday and needs to be completed by the following Wednesday. If you require any assistance with the homework, please let Mrs Muir know before the end of the day Thursday.

Base 6 have PE on Thursday and a Friday. Children should wear school PE kits with a school jumper if needed. Unbranded, plain, dark coloured jumpers and joggers can also be worn if needed. Please ensure that all of your child’s clothing has their name in to ensure that it does not get misplaced.

Times Tables

Please practise your times tables. There are lots of websites online to support this. The children use 'hit the button' mainly to practise but there are many others. Also, each child has been given a Times Table booklet to work through at home. If you need any additional resources please feel free to come for a chat
